  1. The image was stacked and calibrated using Deep Sky Stacker
  2. The result was stretched using Paint Shop Pro until the galaxies became visible
  3. The background colour cast was removed using this technique
  4. The stars wer seperated and placed on another layer using this method
  5. The background layer was stretched some more and converted to 8 bit
  6. The background gradient was removed using this technique
  7. A masked noise reduction was used on the background layer
  8. Finally the star colour was increased and the layers combined to form the final image

A better approach is to simply take a longer exposure.
