Thor's Helmet NGC 2359

Object Object RA 7:18.5 Dec -13:14
Exposure

10 minutes (1 X 10 minutes)

The exposure was cut short by clouds resulting in only a single useable sub-frame. As a result a lot of noise reduction was needed to produce the image above. Some extra sharpening was used to restore as much detail as possible.

ISO 800
Camera Canon 350D DSLR
Optics 8" f/4 Schmidt Newtonian Telescope
Location St. Croix Observatory
Processing Calibration, background noise reduction done with Images Plus . Image was stretched using the digital development function in Images Plus.  Background correction and further noise reduction applied in Paint Shop Pro . After the noise reduction the background was left with low spatial frequency noise blobs that were removed.  Focus Magic was used on a a duplicate layer and a mask used to blend the two layers in order to recover as much detail in the nebula as possible. Masked star reduction was applied and the star colour was enhanced. Finally the image resized for this web page.
